Intake screen services - GoFlo

GoFlo Services

GoFlo provide a full range of intake screen services, from feasibility studies, flood risk assessments through to design, installation and monitoring.

Screening Feasibility Study

Some water intake sites are complicated, and some have existing issues which could be improved with a new layout, screening system and / or change to operational procedures. For complicated sites we offer a Screening Feasibility Study service where will visit the site to understand the layout and see how it works, including looking at any known problems. At the same time we will measure everything for use on installation drawings. Once back in the office we review the site data collected and work out how to optimise the screening arrangement. A concise report is written with clear recommendations on how to deliver the improvements. Note that this is a higher level analysis than the Design and Integration Service below, and is normally only required at sites with existing screening problems.

This is a chargeable service and the price varies depending on the complexity and size of the site, but normally ranges from £1k to £2.5k for screening areas from 5 to 25 m2 (+ travel costs and VAT).

Flood Level Assessments

Flood Risk Assessment

Flood Risk Assessment

It is important to know the ‘worst case flood level’ at the location where the GoFlo screen will be located so that the water-sensitive components (the motor and controller) can be located above this level. In extreme cases an IP68 submersible motor can be provided for an additional cost. This level can usually be determined based on experience of the highest known river levels in the last couple of decade, plus an additional safety margin of 250 mm. Often in the UK the highest river level have occurred during the winter 2000, summer 2007 or winter 2014 floods.

If greater certainty is required, GoFlo can conduct a Flood Level Assessment using available data from the environmental regulator, or from flood modelling. The cost would depend on the complexity of the site and the depth of analysis required, so please get in touch for more details.

Environmental Permits

Sites in natural river environments normally require ‘Environmental Permits’ or similar for permission to ‘work in the river’ from the environmental regulator. The purpose of this consent is to ensure that the flood risk will not be increased during the installation works or once the works are completed, and seeks to ensure that the proposed working methodology will not damage the local environment. GoFlo, and our sister company Renewables First, are expert in obtaining environmental consents and can obtain any necessary consents for you on your behalf. The cost will depend on the complexity of the job and the environmentally sensitivity of the site, so please get in touch for more details.

Planning Consent

Planning consent may be required at some less-industrial sites or sites where there are historic buildings nearby. Exactly where and when planning consent will be required is a bit of a grey area, so the safest course of action is to formally ask the local authority if planning consent will be required. If it is, GoFlo, via our sister company Renewables First, has planning consent specialists in-house who can put together a good quality planning application, submit it on your behalf and managing it though the process. More details can be provided on request.

Installation and Commissioning

Installation and commissioning

Installation and commissioning

The GoFlo travelling water screen comes with comprehensive installation, operation and maintenance instructions and is designed to be straightforward to install. The work required is similar and any comparable piece of machinery and can be installed and commissioned by any competent person. GoFlo would be pleased to provide a turnkey full installation and commissioning service if required.

Monitoring, Servicing and Maintenance Agreements

One of the major benefits of the GoFlo travelling water screen system is that it provides full remote monitoring and control capability as standard, easy accessed through the ‘Goto my GoFlo’ portal. If required GoFlo can provide a monitoring service so we will keep an eye on the screen, via the webcam, and make any adjustments to the operating parameters required to keep your intake screen operating optimally. We would also monitor the operating electrical currents and temperatures to spot any trends that would suggest wear in components, and initiate preventative maintenance if required.

In addition to monitoring we can provide routine servicing and maintenance agreements – please get in touch for more details.

Eel and Fish Pass/Bypass Design

Most new water intakes in locations where fish and eels are present will also require measures to protect fish and eels, which could be a simple fish bypass and eel pass, or in some cases could be a full multi-species fish pass. GoFlo, and our sister company Renewables First, have many years’ experience of designing, constructing and installing fish and eel passes including obtaining Fish Pass Approval from the environmental regulator. More details on fish pass design and construction can be seen here.

For eel passes we have developed a simple modular system which meets the environmental regulator’s guidance and is flexible enough to cope with the range physical site layouts typically encountered. Whatever your fish and eel protection requirements we will be able to come up with a solution.

Coanda Intake Screens

As well as the rotating self-cleaning system, GoFlo also manufactures Coanda intake screens which are typically used in high-head hydropower systems where passive self-cleaning is possible. The screens are all stainless-steel construction and available in the standard full, half and quarter-height configurations. For special applications we can design the screen in non-standard sizes for a modest additional cost. For more details please get in touch, along with an outline of your requirements.
